The Oyo State Police Command has dismissed as false and misleading a viral video alleging that about 300 Lakurawa terrorists had moved into Oyo State, assuring residents that investigations found no evidence to support the claim.
In a statement issued on Sunday, June 14, 2026, the Command said a comprehensive forensic analysis and intelligence-based verification revealed that the video was deliberately designed to create fear, panic, and tension among members of the public.
According to the police, forensic findings showed that the voice-over in the circulated video, allegedly attributed to one Alhaji Muftau from Kontagora, matched information from an earlier false report that had already been investigated and debunked by the Command.
The statement noted that intelligence gathered from operatives deployed across border communities, coupled with the Command’s strengthened early warning and response mechanisms, found no indication that the alleged influx of terrorists into the state had occurred.
The police further disclosed that a joint verification exercise conducted with neighbouring police commands independently confirmed that the information contained in the video was entirely unfounded.
Investigations also established that the footage being circulated was neither recorded in Nigeria nor a recent occurrence, further reinforcing the conclusion that it was intended to mislead the public.
The Command warned individuals and groups against spreading misinformation capable of undermining public peace and security, stressing that anyone found disseminating false information aimed at inciting panic or disrupting public order would be investigated and prosecuted in accordance with the law.
Reaffirming its commitment to maintaining security across the state, the Oyo State Police Command said it remains resolute in safeguarding lives and property under the leadership of the Commissioner of Police, CP Abimbola Ayodeji Olugbenga.
The Command added that it would continue to deploy all lawful measures to sustain the security gains recorded in recent times and ensure that any person or group seeking to destabilise the peace enjoyed in the state is arrested and prosecuted.
It urged residents to remain calm, law-abiding and rely only on verified and official sources for security-related information.
