The Nigerian film industry has been thrown into mourning following the reported death of popular Nollywood actor Alex Ekubo at the age of 40.
News of his passing surfaced on Tuesday, May 12, 2026, after several of his colleagues and associates took to social media to express shock and grief over the development.
Among the first to react was actress Funke Akindele, who shared an emotional tribute on her Instagram story, recalling her close relationship with the late actor.
She lamented her inability to see him one last time and prayed for the repose of his soul while reflecting on the memorable moments they shared.
Actor Bolanle Ninalowo also paid tribute, describing the news as painful and praying for strength for Ekubo’s family, friends, and the entertainment community.
Similarly, actor Godwin Nnadiekwe expressed deep sorrow over the actor’s demise, saying he was devastated by the news.
He described Ekubo as a rare personality in Nollywood and disclosed that the late actor had reportedly made preparations for his will before his death, a revelation he said made the loss even more heartbreaking.
Despite the growing reactions trailing the announcement, members of Ekubo’s family had yet to release an official statement as of the time this report was filed.
The actor’s death comes months after concerns about his health and wellbeing circulated widely on social media following his prolonged absence from public view.
Ekubo had largely stayed away from Instagram and other online platforms since late December 2024, prompting speculation among fans and followers.
His silence ended briefly when a video surfaced online showing him spending time with children during a public outing.
The clip quickly went viral, with many social media users observing that the actor appeared slimmer and quieter than usual.
The development reignited conversations about his condition, as admirers questioned whether he had been battling undisclosed personal or health challenges.
Before his death, Ekubo had repeatedly dismissed public pressure regarding marriage and relationships, insisting that his primary focus was achieving greater success and financial stability in the movie industry.
The late actor’s personal life had also attracted public attention in recent years following the collapse of his engagement to US-based model Fancy Acholonu.
Their relationship became a major topic online after Acholonu publicly called off their planned wedding in 2021.
A year later, she apologised publicly to the actor and reaffirmed her affection for him, admitting that emotions and overreaction contributed to the breakup. She maintained that she still cared deeply for him despite the separation.
Ekubo, however, appeared determined to move beyond the controversy, often hinting on social media that he was unconcerned about societal expectations surrounding marriage. He maintained that building his career and financial future remained his top priority.
Widely admired for his charming screen presence and versatility, Ekubo featured in numerous Nollywood productions and built a strong fan base over the years, making him one of the industry’s recognisable faces.
