United States President Donald Trump has announced the suspension of a planned military strike against Iran, saying the decision was made to allow ongoing diplomatic efforts aimed at resolving tensions over Tehran’s nuclear programme and reopening the Strait of Hormuz.
Trump disclosed the development in a post on his Truth Social platform on Sunday, stating that although the United States was fully prepared to launch military action, it had agreed to delay the operation following a request from Iran and other Middle Eastern countries seeking time to conclude a proposed agreement.
According to the U.S. President, the proposed deal would include the “immediate, complete and total” reopening of the Strait of Hormuz and measures to eliminate what he described as Iran’s nuclear threat.
He added that Israel supports the decision to suspend the attack, stressing, however, that the cancellation remains conditional on the successful conclusion of the agreement.
“The U.S.A. is locked and loaded and ready to go against the Islamic Republic of Iran, at levels of Military Terror, Strength, and Power not seen since World War II,” Trump wrote.
“Despite this, we have just been asked by Iran, and other Middle Eastern Countries, to hold off any attack in that the perimeters of a deal has been agreed to. This would include the Immediate, Complete, and Total OPENING OF THE HORMUZ STRAIT, and an end to Iran’s nuclear threat.
“Based on this request, I have agreed, for the future benefit of the WORLD and, likewise, the survival of a successful and prosperous Iran, to cancel the attack, subject to being able to rapidly make a DEAL. The Country of Israel joins me in this commitment. Get to work, everybody, and get it DONE.”
The announcement marks a significant shift in tensions between Washington and Tehran and comes about two weeks after the United States reportedly carried out military operations against Iranian targets for an 11th consecutive night following warnings from Tehran against attacks on its nuclear facilities.
At the time, the U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) said the operations were intended to degrade Iran’s capacity to threaten commercial shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most strategic maritime routes for global oil and gas exports.
Trump did not provide further details on the proposed agreement or indicate when negotiations would be concluded. However, his latest statement suggests the United States is leaving the door open for diplomacy while maintaining military pressure if talks fail.
