Concern has gripped the University of Ibadan (UI) community following the disappearance of a female undergraduate of the institution who reportedly failed to return after attending a national religious programme in Imo State.
The missing student, Tomisin, a 300-level Law student, was said to have participated in the National Conference of the Scripture Union Student Fellowship held at the organisation’s Camp of Faith in Okigwe, Imo State.
University authorities and student leaders confirmed that efforts are underway to establish her whereabouts after she was declared missing upon her failure to sit for scheduled examinations earlier this week.
Addressing growing concerns over the incident, the University of Ibadan Students’ Union clarified that only one student of the institution is currently unaccounted for, contrary to reports circulating on social media alleging that several UI students had gone missing.
The union’s leadership disclosed that it had commenced consultations with relevant stakeholders, including security agencies and religious bodies connected to the trip, to gather accurate information and support ongoing rescue efforts.
Tomisin, who serves as National Secretary of the Scripture Union Student Fellowship, Nigeria, and also holds a leadership position within the fellowship’s University of Ibadan chapter, was among participants returning from the conference when communication with her was reportedly lost.
Sources familiar with the development indicated that another student from the university who attended the same programme successfully returned home, while concerns remain over the whereabouts of the vehicle conveying some conference officials.
Reacting to the development, the Dean of Student Affairs at the University of Ibadan, Professor Ademola Lewis, confirmed that the institution had been briefed on the matter and was working with relevant authorities to ensure the student’s safe recovery.
He noted that the university had not received prior notification about the trip but assured members of the academic community that efforts were being intensified to resolve the situation.
The university management and student leaders have appealed for calm, urging students and members of the public to avoid spreading unverified reports that could hamper ongoing investigations.
