Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, on Tuesday, May 5, 2026, reaffirmed the pivotal role of women in national development as she attended the National Women Mega Empowerment and Rally held at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium in Abuja.
Addressing a large gathering of women from across the country, the First Lady noted that women, who constitute over half of Nigeria’s population, remain a critical force in shaping the nation’s future.
She stressed that their active participation in decision-making processes is essential for meaningful and sustainable development.
Mrs Tinubu commended the Minister of Women Affairs and Social Development, Imaan Sulaiman-Ibrahim, for her efforts in driving policies and initiatives aimed at empowering women nationwide.
She emphasised that empowering women to make informed decisions would strengthen families and communities, aligning with the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, which advocates inclusiveness and increased female participation in governance.
Echoing the President’s vision, the First Lady declared, “When Nigerian women rise, Nigeria rises,” underscoring the transformative impact of women’s empowerment on national growth.
A key moment at the event was the presentation of the Women’s Charter for National Development to the First Lady. She assured participants that the document, which outlines key priorities for women’s advancement, would be formally presented to the President.
Mrs Tinubu also called on women to remain committed to raising responsible children and upholding strong family values, describing these as foundational to building a better society.
In her remarks, Sulaiman-Ibrahim described the rally as a unifying platform that brings women together across regions and backgrounds.
She highlighted the “Power of 10 Million Women” initiative as a strategic movement designed to amplify women’s voices and influence in governance and national development.
The event featured the symbolic distribution of empowerment items to beneficiaries, including tricycles, power tillers, sewing machines, grinding machines, hair dryers, and freezers, aimed at supporting women’s economic independence.
The rally also spotlighted key priorities captured in the Women’s Charter for National Development, including increased political inclusion, expanded economic opportunities, and improved welfare for women and children.
