The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, has directed all Commissioners of Police in Nigeria to immediately begin a comprehensive audit of arms and ammunition in their respective commands.
The directive was issued during an emergency conference with senior police officers and members of the press at the Goodluck Ebele Jonathan Peacekeeping Centre in Abuja.
According to the police chief, the exercise is aimed at strengthening accountability within the Force, identifying operational gaps, preventing the misuse of police assets, and improving overall operational readiness nationwide.
Disu stressed that the audit goes beyond routine administrative procedures, describing it as a critical institutional measure to ensure that all arms and ammunition in police custody are properly documented, securely managed, and effectively deployed in line with national security priorities.
He further directed Commissioners of Police to conduct the exercise with the highest level of professionalism, transparency, and diligence, noting that detailed reports must be submitted to the Force Headquarters within a stipulated timeframe.
Reaffirming the Force’s commitment to reform, the IGP said ongoing efforts are focused on entrenching accountability, professionalism, and transparency, alongside strengthening internal control systems.
The Nigeria Police Force also assured the public that the reforms under the current leadership are geared toward building a more disciplined, efficient, and responsive institution capable of addressing evolving security challenges across the country.
