The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has extradited a suspected online fraudster, Samuel Ugberease, popularly known as “Putsammy,” “Putput,” and “Sammy,” to the United States of America over allegations of online romance scam, wire fraud and related financial crimes.
The extradition was carried out by the INTERPOL National Central Bureau Abuja on Wednesday following the completion of legal proceedings and collaboration between Nigerian and U.S. law enforcement agencies.
Police said the suspect, who was based in South Africa before his arrest, was accused of operating a criminal syndicate involved in online romance scams targeting women in the United States between 2014 and 2018.
Investigations revealed that the syndicate allegedly created fake online identities and dating profiles to establish fraudulent relationships with victims before deceiving them into sending money through fabricated emergencies and false pretences.
According to the police, proceeds of the fraud were laundered through multiple bank accounts used to conceal illicit funds.
The Force disclosed that the suspect was linked to the defrauding of one victim of more than $1.5 million.
Ugberease was arrested by INTERPOL operatives at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport on December 14, 2025, upon his arrival from South Africa, following an INTERPOL Red Notice issued by U.S. authorities.
The Federal High Court in Lagos subsequently granted an application for his extradition in line with the provisions of Nigeria’s Extradition Act.
The police reaffirmed their commitment to combating cybercrime, financial fraud and transnational organised crimes through intelligence-led policing and international collaboration.
