The Oyo State chapter of the Theatre Arts and Motion Pictures Practitioners Association of Nigeria (TAMPAN) has mourned the death of veteran actor and filmmaker Alhaji Taiwo Hassan, popularly known as Ogogo, describing his passing as a monumental loss to the Yoruba movie industry.
Hassan died on Sunday, August 23, 2026, at the age of 66, after a prolonged battle with cancer. His death has triggered an outpouring of tributes from colleagues and stakeholders across Nigeria’s entertainment industry.
In a condolence statement signed by the Oyo State Chairman of TAMPAN, Bosede Akinola, the association described Ogogo as a pillar of the Yoruba film industry whose talent, discipline and mentorship influenced generations of actors.
TAMPAN said the late actor devoted decades to the stage and screen, featuring in hundreds of productions that helped promote Yoruba language, culture and values to audiences in Nigeria and beyond.
The association said Hassan’s influence extended beyond his performances, noting that he served as a mentor to several young practitioners who went on to establish successful careers in the industry.
“With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of one of our own, a veteran, a teacher, and an icon, Alhaji Taiwo Hassan,” the statement said.
“His contributions to Yoruba cinema cannot be overemphasized. He was a man of integrity, professionalism, and passion for the arts.
“We have lost a reference point and a father figure. His legacies in theatre, film production and cultural preservation will continue to speak for him.”
TAMPAN extended its condolences to Hassan’s immediate family, members of the association nationwide and his fans across the world.
The association also prayed to Almighty Allah to grant the late actor eternal rest and give his family and loved ones the strength to bear the loss.
Hassan, who was born in Ilaro, Ogun State, began his acting career in 1981 and went on to become one of the most recognisable figures in Yoruba-language cinema. His career spanned more than four decades, during which he worked as an actor, filmmaker and producer.
His remains are expected to be taken to Ilaro, where a lying-in-state ceremony is scheduled for Monday, August 24. A burial prayer has also been announced by the Ilaro Muslim Community.
