The University of Ibadan (UI) has appointed Mrs. Mariam Adetoun Zakariyah as its new Bursar, making history as the first woman to occupy the position since the institution was established.
Her appointment followed a rigorous selection process in which 11 candidates applied for the office. Four candidates were subsequently shortlisted and appeared before the University’s Selection Board for the final interview.
The Selection Board comprised the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of Council, the Vice-Chancellor, four representatives of the Governing Council who are not members of the University Senate, and two elected members of the Senate.
At the conclusion of the exercise, Zakariyah emerged as the top-performing candidate with an overall score of 89.1 per cent.
The newly appointed Bursar is 51 years old and a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN). She holds a Master of Science (M.Sc.) degree in Economics.
Before her appointment, she served as a Deputy Bursar, a position she attained in 2019, bringing years of experience in university financial administration to her new role.
Her appointment marks a significant milestone for Nigeria’s premier university, breaking a longstanding gender barrier in one of its principal administrative offices.
