President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has mourned the death of veteran Nigerian actor and film executive, Oludotun Baiyewu Jacobs, popularly known as Olu Jacobs, who died at the age of 84.
In a condolence message issued following the actor’s death on Wednesday, September 16, 2026, President Tinubu described Jacobs as one of Nigeria’s most distinguished thespians and a major figure in the development of the country’s entertainment industry.
The President noted that Jacobs’ illustrious career crossed several decades and extended across theatre, television and film, both in Nigeria and internationally.
According to Tinubu, the late actor’s professional journey included training at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts in London, after which he established himself in British television and international cinema before returning to Nigeria.
The President said Jacobs subsequently played a significant role in shaping Nigeria’s film industry, earning major honours and awards for his performances and contributions to the creative sector.
He also noted that the veteran actor was conferred with the national honour of Member of the Order of the Federal Republic (MFR) in recognition of his contributions to the country.
Tinubu described Jacobs as a towering figure whose talent, discipline and commitment to his profession inspired generations of actors and filmmakers.
He further praised the late actor’s ability to give depth and authenticity to the characters he portrayed, saying his performances earned him admiration both in Nigeria and across the world.
“He was a giant of the Nigerian creative industry. His passing is a great loss to Nigeria, the African film industry and the global community of lovers of the performing arts. His remarkable body of work will continue to speak to generations yet unborn,” the President said.
Tinubu stressed the importance of the creative industry to Nigeria’s cultural identity, international image and economic development, noting that Jacobs made a significant contribution to building that identity.
The President extended his condolences to Jacobs’ family, particularly his wife, veteran actress Chief Joke Silva, their children, relatives and colleagues in the Nigerian film industry.
He also sympathised with the wider creative community over the loss of the celebrated actor and prayed for the repose of his soul.
