Veteran Nigerian actor and film executive, Oludotun Baiyewu Jacobs, popularly known as Olu Jacobs, has died at the age of 84.
The celebrated actor passed away on Wednesday, September 16, 2026, with the announcement made on social media by his family through his son, Olusoji Jacobs.
In the family statement, Jacobs was described as “The Lion of Lufodo” and remembered as a beloved husband, father, grandfather and uncle. The family also appealed to bloggers and social media influencers to respect their privacy as they mourn his passing.
Born on July 11, 1942, Jacobs built an illustrious career spanning more than five decades, working across theatre, television and film in Nigeria and abroad.
He received his professional training at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London and began his career in Britain, where he appeared in stage productions, television programmes and international films before returning to Nigeria.
Jacobs subsequently became one of the defining figures of Nigeria’s film industry, earning widespread recognition for his commanding performances and memorable portrayals of traditional rulers, patriarchs and other authoritative characters.
Beyond acting, he contributed to the development of the performing arts alongside his wife, veteran actress Joke Silva. The couple co-founded the Lufodo Group and were involved in nurturing young talents through the Lufodo Academy of Performing Arts.
His contributions to the Nigerian arts earned him several honours, including the national award of Member of the Order of the Federal Republic (MFR) in 2011. He also received major industry awards during his career, including the Africa Movie Academy Award for Best Actor in a Leading Role in 2007.
News of his death has triggered an outpouring of tributes from colleagues, entertainers and admirers who have continued to celebrate his influence on Nigerian theatre and cinema.
Jacobs is survived by his wife, Joke Silva, and their children.
His death marks the passing of one of the most recognisable figures of Nigeria’s entertainment industry.
