President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has conferred national honours on 14 distinguished Nigerian journalists in recognition of their contributions to democracy, press freedom and national development.
The President announced the honours during his Democracy Day address on Friday, June 12, 2026, as part of activities marking the anniversary of Nigeria’s return to democratic rule.
The journalists recognised by the President are Tunde Fagbenle, Oladele Alake, Olatunji Bello, Louis Odion, Sam Omatseye, Bola Bolawole, Lade Bonuola, Femi Kusa, Richard Akinnola, Niran Malaolu, Gbemiga Ogunleye, Muyiwa Adekeye, Babajide Kolade-Otitoju, and Osa Director.

Faces of Journalists Honourees
Tinubu’s recognition of the media veterans highlights the crucial role played by journalists in defending democratic values, promoting accountability, and shaping public discourse in Nigeria over the years.
Many of the award recipients have built distinguished careers spanning newspaper publishing, broadcasting, public affairs commentary and media management, while some were actively involved in the struggle against military rule and the campaign for the restoration of democracy.

The honours form part of a broader national recognition programme unveiled by the President to celebrate individuals who made significant contributions to Nigeria’s democratic journey and the advancement of good governance.
The award has been widely viewed as an acknowledgement of the sacrifices, courage and commitment demonstrated by journalists in safeguarding freedom of expression and strengthening democratic institutions in the country.
Democracy Day, celebrated annually on June 12, commemorates the struggle for democratic governance in Nigeria and honours those who played pivotal roles in the nation’s democratic evolution.
