The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has condemned the fatal shooting of a suspect, Mene Ogidi, by a police officer in Effurun, Delta State, describing the incident as a clear violation of its operational guidelines.
According to a statement signed by the Force Public Relations Officer, DCP Anthony Okon Placid, the incident, which occurred on April 26, 2026, involved operatives attached to the Effurun Area Command who had responded to credible intelligence from Benin Motor Park along the Warri–Sapele Expressway.
According to preliminary reports, the suspect had been apprehended by members of a transport union while attempting to waybill a parcel containing a Beretta pistol loaded with four rounds of ammunition.
However, while efforts were underway to take the suspect into lawful custody, the team leader, ASP Nuhu Usman, allegedly discharged his firearm without justification, resulting in the suspect’s death.
In a swift response, the police high command ordered the immediate transfer of the officer and his team to the Force Headquarters in Abuja. They are to appear before the Force Disciplinary Committee for summary disciplinary action and possible prosecution.
The Inspector-General of Police expressed condolences to the family of the deceased, assuring them that justice would be served in accordance with the law.
He also called on members of the public to remain calm and law-abiding as the disciplinary and legal processes unfold.
Reiterating its commitment to professionalism and accountability, the Nigeria Police Force emphasised its zero-tolerance policy toward extra-judicial killings, abuse of authority, and any conduct capable of eroding public trust.
