Retired Major-General Rabe Abubakar, a former Director of Defence Information, has died while being held captive by bandits, the Katsina State Government has confirmed.
Abubakar and his wife were abducted in May while travelling through Katsina State. His death was announced on Saturday in a statement issued by Nasiru Mu’azu, the state Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs.
According to the government, the retired army officer died from complications arising from diabetes and hypertension while in captivity.
“It is with profound sadness that we confirm the General’s death while in bandits’ captivity,” the statement said.
The government noted that despite sustained efforts by security agencies and the state administration to secure his release, the situation ended tragically.
“The deceased retired General died a natural death from complications of diabetes and hypertension,” Mu’azu stated.
Describing the incident as a significant national loss, the Katsina State Government said Abubakar’s death was a painful blow not only to his family and the state but also to the country, considering his years of service to the nation.
Governor Dikko Umaru Radda extended his condolences to the family of the late military officer and Nigerians at large, describing the development as a dark moment for the state.
According to the governor, the tragedy underscores the urgent need for stronger collaboration in the fight against banditry and other forms of criminality threatening communities across the country.
The state government reiterated its commitment to working closely with the Federal Government and security agencies to ensure those responsible for the abduction are brought to justice.
“We assure the citizens of Katsina State that our resolve to eliminate banditry and ensure the safety of all residents remains unshaken,” the statement added.
The government also expressed sympathy to the bereaved family, praying for the peaceful repose of the late retired major-general.
Abubakar, a respected military officer and former spokesman of the Nigerian Armed Forces, is remembered for his contributions to national security and public service during his years in uniform.
