The Federal Government of Nigeria has announced Wednesday, May 27, and Thursday, May 28, 2026, as official public holidays in commemoration of this year’s Eid-el-Kabir festivities.
The declaration was made by the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, through an official statement released on Monday, May 25, 2026,
by the ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Magdalene Ajani.
According to the government, the holiday approval is aimed at allowing Muslim faithful across Nigeria adequate time to observe one of Islam’s most revered celebrations, which symbolizes devotion, sacrifice, and unwavering faith in God.
In his message to Muslims at home and abroad, Tunji-Ojo described Eid-ul-Adha as a sacred period that promotes selflessness, compassion, and obedience to divine instruction. He noted that the festival serves as a reminder of the values of love, generosity, and unity that are essential for national growth.
The minister encouraged Nigerians to take advantage of the festive break to pray for the nation’s stability and progress, especially at a time when collective commitment to peace and development remains crucial.
He emphasized the importance of national unity and urged citizens, regardless of ethnic or religious background, to promote harmony, tolerance, and peaceful coexistence throughout the celebration.
The Interior Ministry further expressed hope that the Eid-el-Kabir season would inspire renewed faith, strengthen social bonds, and foster a spirit of togetherness among Nigerians.
The Federal Government also extended warm greetings to the Muslim community, wishing them a joyful, safe, and spiritually fulfilling Eid-ul-Adha celebration.
