Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has condemned the killing of 32 Nigerians in Ungushi community, Kebbe Local Government Area of Sokoto State, describing the incident as devastating and another indication of the worsening security situation in the country.
Atiku, in a statement, expressed sympathy with the families of the victims and the people of Sokoto State, praying for the repose of the souls of those killed and strength for their loved ones.
“I am devastated by the killing of 32 innocent Nigerians in Ungushi community, Kebbe LGA of Sokoto State. My heart goes out to the bereaved families and the people of Sokoto State. May Allah forgive the departed and give their loved ones the strength to endure this unbearable loss,” Atiku said
However, the former vice president said condolences alone were no longer sufficient in the face of the recurring killings across the country.
He questioned how many more Nigerians would have to lose their lives before the Federal Government would treat the protection of citizens as an emergency.
According to him, the repeated killings have become “frighteningly recurrent,” warning that the government should not be satisfied with issuing condolences and statements after every massacre.
Atiku called on the Federal Government to move beyond expressions of sympathy and take concrete measures to protect vulnerable communities.
He urged the government to strengthen intelligence gathering, secure communities at risk of attacks and ensure that those responsible for the killings are arrested and prosecuted.
“The first duty of government is to protect life. Nigerians cannot continue to bury their loved ones while those entrusted with their security offer excuses,” he said.
Atiku prayed for comfort for the people of Sokoto State and the restoration of peace across Nigeria.
