The first batch of 262 Nigerians returning from South Africa has departed Johannesburg and is currently en route to Lagos aboard an Air Peace flight, with arrival expected shortly.
The evacuation exercise was facilitated by the Federal Government following a directive by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who approved and fully funded the flight to ensure the safe and dignified return of the affected citizens.
The return operation was coordinated by the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM) in collaboration with several government agencies, including the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), the National Commission for Refugees, Migrants and Internally Displaced Persons, the Nigeria Immigration Service, and the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC).
The agencies worked under the supervision of the Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs to ensure a seamless repatriation process for the returnees.
Nigeria’s Acting High Commissioner to South Africa, Ambassador Ajayi, is accompanying the group on the journey back home.
Upon arrival in Lagos, the returnees will be received by a Federal Government delegation led by the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Sola Enikanolaiye.
Officials said the exercise reflects the Federal Government’s commitment to the welfare and protection of Nigerians abroad, particularly those facing difficult circumstances and seeking assistance to return home.
The arrival of the first batch marks a significant step in ongoing efforts to support Nigerians in the diaspora and facilitate their reintegration into society.
