A renowned Nigerian linguist and scholar of the University of Ibadan (UI), Emeritus Professor Ayo Bamgbose, has passed away at the age of 94.
According to the information gathered, Bamgbose died peacefully on the morning of Saturday, July 25, 2026.
Born on January 27, 1932 in Odopotu, near Ijebu Ode, Ogun State, Professor Bamgbose was one of Africa’s foremost authorities on linguistics and indigenous language studies. Throughout his distinguished academic career, he made immense contributions to the development, promotion, and preservation of Nigerian languages, particularly the Yoruba language, earning international recognition for his scholarship.
He served in various academic and leadership positions and authored numerous books and scholarly works that influenced language policy, multilingual education and linguistic research across Africa and beyond.
Tributes are expected from colleagues, former students, academic institutions and admirers in Nigeria and around the world, celebrating his enduring legacy in education, research and the advancement of African languages.
Details of his funeral arrangements are expected to be announced by the family in due course.
