The Oyo State Government has declared the purported removal of Dr Saka Adegbite Balogun as the Balogun of Ogbomoso invalid, insisting that only the state governor has the legal authority to depose a recognised Part II chieftaincy titleholder.
The government’s position was contained in a statement issued on Friday, October 23, 2026, by the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Matters, Ademola Ojo.
The statement followed media reports that the Soun of Ogbomoso, Oba Ghandi Afolabi Olaoye, had removed Balogun from his traditional title.
Citing Section 26(1) of the Chiefs Law of Oyo State, 2000, the government said the power to appoint, suspend or depose a recognised Part II chieftaincy titleholder rests exclusively with the state governor.
It described the reported removal of Balogun by the Soun as contrary to the existing law governing the operation of traditional councils in the state.
“In the light of this, Dr Saka Adegbite Balogun is the duly recognised Balogun of Ogbomoso land,” the statement said.
The government consequently urged members of the public to disregard reports of his removal, maintaining that Balogun remains the recognised holder of the title.
The statement was signed by Ojo in his capacity as Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Matters.
