Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki, has commended the Edo State Police Command for arresting the suspects connected to the rape and gruesome murder of a 100-level Microbiology undergraduate of the University of Benin, Vera Uwaila Omozuwa.
Uwa was killed on Wednesday, May 27 2020 at her local church, The Redeemed Christian Church of God, Edo Province 10, Ikpoba Hill, Benin, where she had gone to read.
The governor, in a statement, commended the state police command for following through with the case and working to ensure the suspects were arrested.
He said, “I applaud the Edo State Police Command under the leadership of Mr. Johnson Kokumo, for their steadfastness in ensuring that they trailed those suspected to have murdered Miss. Uwa Omozuwa, who had sought the serenity of a church premises to study in preparation for her examinations.
“While this is the first step in unraveling and bringing those culpable in the dastardly act to justice, we urge the Police not to rest on their oars but to ensure diligent and thorough investigation. We are also confident that the just resolution of the matter would benefit from the Violence Against Persons Prohibition (VAPP)law that is in force in the state.”
He noted that the Edo State Command of Nigeria Police Force has continued to show strength in combating violent crimes in the state under the leadership of the State Police Commissioner, Johnson Kokumo.
“We commend the police force for the pace of the investigation and for their dedication to duty as this matter is close to our hearts”, he said.
According to the suspects, Uwa’s landlady paid them N1m to get her for rituals purpose in order to boost her business, claiming that Uwa was “too pure” and also found the young lady’s chastity the right kind for her evil intentions.
The suspects tracked the lady to the church based on the information they had about her usual routine, and attacked her. Uwa had fought back, prompting one of them to reach for the church’s fire extinguisher which was hanging on a wall, and he plummeted it into her skull.
They eventually had their way with her when she was weakened from the struggle and after they were done, they wiped her private part with a white handkerchief that was provided by the said landlady.
