As the 13th Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ibadan (UI), Professor Kayode Adebowale, bows out of office on Monday, November 30, 2026, the institution has called for applications from within and outside the university for the position.
In advertisements placed in the national newspapers and signed by the institution’s Registrar, G. O. Saliu, the Governing Council approved the commencement of the process to appoint the 14th Vice-Chancellor on Wednesday, March 4, 2026.
According to the advertisement, the process is intended to ensure that there is no vacuum in the office after Adebowale’s exit. It is in accordance with the provisions of the Universities (Miscellaneous Provisions) Decree No. 11 of 1993 (as amended by Decree No. 25 of 1996) and by the Universities (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act, 1993 (Amendment) Act 2003 and Act 2012.
The University, established in 1948, currently has a student population of 36,767, comprising: 17,423 Undergraduates, 7,844 Postgraduates, 11,500 Open Distance Learners.
The institution also has 15 Halls of Residence, providing accommodation for about 40 percent of the students in the regular study mode. It has a total staff strength of 5,300 with 867 housing units for both senior and junior staff.
The advertisement states that candidates must possess a good university education and be proven, successful managers of human and material resources.
Specifically, candidates must be highly distinguished scholars in the rank of a professor, with a minimum of 10 years’ experience at that level, and must demonstrate the ability to provide both academic and administrative leadership.
Other requirements include proven integrity,an age not exceeding 65 years by the expected date of assumption of duty in November 2026, the ability to command respect within national and international academic communities, capacity to strenghten relationships among staff, students, and stakeholders, a clear vision for the university’s development, sound physical and mental health, and the ability to attract funding.
The window for the submission of applications is six weeks.
