The College of Postgraduate Studies, Rivers State University (RSU), has honoured Professor Abel Idowu Olayinka of the University of Ibadan (UI) with an award for his transformational academic leadership and distinguished contributions to higher education in Nigeria.
Olayinka received the recognition at the 2nd Postgraduate Conference of the College of Postgraduate Studies, Rivers State University, held in Port Harcourt on Tuesday, August 18, 2026.
The award, titled “Award for Transformational Academic Leadership of Higher Education in Nigeria,” was conferred on the University of Ibadan professor in recognition of what the College described as his transformational academic leadership, commitment to academic excellence and contributions to the advancement of higher education in Nigeria.
According to the Provost of the College of Postgraduate Studies, Professor T.K.S. Abam, the “Award for Transformational Academic Leadership of Higher Education in Nigeria,” was conferred on the University of Ibadan professor in recognition of what he described as his transformational academic leadership, commitment to academic excellence and contributions to the advancement of higher education in Nigeria.
He stated that Olayinka’s exemplary leadership and contributions to the development of higher education had made him deserving of the honour.
The award presentation formed part of the activities of the two-day postgraduate conference, which opened with an elaborate programme featuring academic and institutional leaders.

Olayinka was also the keynote speaker at the conference, where he delivered an address around the theme: “Global Challenges, Local Solutions: Driving Inclusive Growth and Transformation through Postgraduate Research.”
The theme placed postgraduate research at the centre of discussions on how universities and researchers can respond to contemporary global challenges while developing solutions that address local realities.
The conference is designed to provide a platform for postgraduate scholars and academics to engage with emerging global challenges and explore ways research can contribute to inclusive development and societal transformation.

The recognition of Olayinka adds to the growing acknowledgement of the role of experienced academics and university leaders in strengthening Nigeria’s higher education system.
