Barr. Abdur-Raheem Adebayo Shittu, the former Minister of Communication, has criticised those who describe Western education as harmful to Muslims, arguing that education has played an important role in his own life and should be embraced by Nigerians.
In an interview with PrimeStar News Online, the former Minister of Communications said his exposure to Western education had not weakened his Islamic faith but had instead helped him acquire knowledge and better understand his religion.
Shittu argued that Islam encourages the pursuit of knowledge and exploration, describing as ignorant those who discourage Muslims from acquiring Western education.
He also advocated free and compulsory education, saying education should be treated as a priority in Nigeria.
The former minister urged political leaders to move beyond general campaign promises and present specific programmes capable of addressing the needs of citizens.
He identified free education and free healthcare among the policies he would like political candidates to prioritise.
