Popular Kano-based social media political commentator and blogger, Ibrahim Khalil Dan Shagamu, has been killed at his residence in Gaida, Kumbotso Local Government Area of Kano State.
Dan Shagamu, who ran the platform Dan-Shagamu International, was known for his outspoken commentary on politics, religion and community affairs. He frequently criticised the Kano State and Federal Governments and had a significant following on Facebook, TikTok and X.
His body was reportedly discovered at his residence after neighbours and associates became concerned after they could not reach him. Reports said he was found in a pool of blood after being attacked in his home.
The circumstances surrounding the killing have continued to generate concern, particularly as Dan Shagamu had previously spoken about threats to his life. His family reportedly said he had received anonymous threats before his death, forcing him to change residence at one point.
The latest information indicates that two suspects have been arrested in connection with the killing. The victim was reportedly attacked after suspected assailants gained access to his residence, and he was later taken to hospital, where he was confirmed dead.
Former Kano State Governor, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, condemned the killing and called for an immediate and transparent investigation. He also urged the government to ensure the protection of opposition voices and accountability for those responsible.
Senator Shehu Sani also condemned the killing, describing it as unacceptable and warning that political intolerance, thuggery and violence posed a threat to Nigeria’s national unity and stability.
Amnesty International has equally condemned Dan Shagamu’s killing and called on the Nigerian authorities to conduct a thorough investigation and ensure that those responsible are brought to justice. The organisation also expressed concern over reports of politically related threats and intimidation ahead of the 2027 elections.
Dan Shagamu had previously faced legal trouble over his online commentary. In December 2022, a Kano State High Court ordered that he be remanded over alleged defamation of former Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Tukur Yusuf Buratai (rtd), following a video he shared on social media.
His death has sparked mourning among family members, fellow content creators, political associates and followers, many of whom have described him as a fearless and outspoken commentator.
The investigation into the killing is expected to establish the motive and identify all those involved.
