Former Communications Minister, Barr. Abdur-Raheem Adebayo Shittu, has vowed to continue his agitation for the establishment of Sharia Courts in Oyo State beyond the 2027 general elections.
Shittu disclosed this in an interview with PrimeStar News Online, saying the issue would remain one of his major concerns even though he has decided not to contest any elective office again.
According to him, Muslims in Oyo State should have access to a Sharia judicial system for matters arising from Islamic personal law.
He argued that the Constitution provides for Sharia Courts of Appeal and maintained that establishing the appropriate lower-level court structure would enable Muslims to pursue matters such as inheritance and other issues arising from Islamic marriages under Islamic law.
Shittu stressed that the proposed court would be optional for Muslims and would not be imposed on people of other faiths.
He said his decision to step away from electoral politics would not end his involvement in issues affecting Muslims, adding that he intends to continue advocating for what he considers their rights.
