The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, has appointed Superintendent of Police Awu Fidelis Jonah as the substantive Head of the Complaint Response Unit (CRU) of the Nigeria Police Force.
The appointment is aimed at strengthening accountability, improving responses to public complaints and rebuilding confidence in the police complaint-management system.
Jonah brings extensive experience in complaint handling, criminal investigation, supervision, leadership and international peacekeeping to the position.
According to the police, he was among the pioneer members of the Complaint Response Unit and rose through various positions to become its Second-in-Command before his appointment as substantive head.
His previous responsibilities within the unit covered complaint processing, call-centre operations, supervision, citizen engagement and institutional accountability.
Jonah holds a Higher National Diploma from the Federal Polytechnic, Nasarawa, a Postgraduate Diploma in Crime Management and a Master’s Degree in Criminal Justice System from Kaduna State University.
He also holds a Master’s Degree in Security and Strategic Studies from the Nigerian Defence Academy, Kaduna, and graduated from the Advanced Detective Course 67 at the Police Staff College, Jos.
The new CRU head has equally undergone training in human rights and professional policing, equipping him with additional knowledge relevant to handling complaints against police personnel.
Beyond his domestic policing experience, Jonah served as Deputy Contingent Commander of Formed Police Unit Contingent 11 in Mogadishu, Somalia, between 2022 and 2023.
The assignment exposed him to international policing operations and further strengthened his experience in operational leadership and multinational security cooperation.
Following the appointment, Disu charged Jonah to uphold professionalism, ensure prompt responses to complaints and respect the fundamental rights of members of the public.
The IGP also tasked him with ensuring that allegations against police officers are handled transparently and in line with established procedures.
The appointment forms part of the Nigeria Police Force’s efforts to strengthen internal accountability mechanisms and improve how complaints from citizens are received, investigated and addressed.
The force reiterated its commitment to promoting professional, responsive and people-centred policing, with emphasis on public trust, accountability and respect for human rights.
