Governor Biodun Oyebanji of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has been re-elected as the governor of Ekiti State after recording a sweeping victory in Saturday’s governorship election across the state’s 16 local government areas.
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) announced the outcome of the election in the early hours of Sunday at the State Collation Centre in Ado-Ekiti, confirming that the incumbent governor met the constitutional requirements to retain his seat.
The Chief Returning Officer for the election, Prof. Adenike Oladiji, who is the Vice-Chancellor of the Federal University of Technology, Akure, declared Oyebanji winner after the completion of collation from all local government areas.
According to the official results, the APC candidate garnered 319,224 votes to secure a decisive victory over his closest challengers. The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate, Olumayokun Oluyede, polled 40,533 votes, while the African Democratic Congress (ADC) candidate, Dare Bejide, received 12,872 votes.
Election statistics released by INEC showed that Ekiti State has 988,251 registered voters, with 384,940 voters accredited for the exercise. A total of 382,109 votes were cast, while 375,777 were declared valid.
The results indicated a dominant performance by the ruling APC across the state, with the governor winning in virtually all the local government areas.
In Efon Local Government Area, the home council of the PDP candidate, the APC also emerged victorious. Oyebanji secured 8,742 votes in the council, while the PDP candidate polled 2,051 votes.
Supporters of the APC celebrated the outcome in parts of Ado-Ekiti and other communities following the announcement, describing the result as a reaffirmation of public confidence in the administration.
The declaration officially grants Oyebanji another four-year term as governor of Ekiti State, extending the APC’s control of the state government.
