The Jigawa State Police Command has commenced an investigation into the sudden death of a 60-year-old man who reportedly collapsed after checking into a hotel in Dutse with a 20-year-old woman.
The command’s spokesperson, SP Shi’isu Adam, disclosed the incident in a statement issued to journalists on Tuesday night, saying the case was reported on Tuesday, July 21, 2026, at about 12:50 p.m.
According to the police, the deceased had checked into the hotel with the young woman before developing a medical emergency shortly after requesting a meal.
Adam said the man reportedly began gasping for air soon after the food was served, prompting an emergency response.
“Upon receiving the distress report, police officers attached to the Yalwawa Division responded swiftly to the scene,” he said.
The victim was immediately rushed to the General Hospital in Dutse, where medical personnel examined him and confirmed him dead.
Following the incident, detectives secured the scene and carried out a preliminary investigation.
The police spokesperson said officers recovered food items, beverages, a suspected sexual enhancement substance, and other personal effects from the hotel room for forensic examination as part of the ongoing investigation.
He added that all necessary procedures were observed to preserve the exhibits and facilitate a thorough probe.
After medical certification of death and the completion of official procedures, the deceased’s remains were released to his family for burial at their request.
Adam also confirmed that the 20-year-old woman who was with the deceased is cooperating with investigators and has been providing useful information to help establish the sequence of events leading to the man’s death.
“The investigation remains ongoing,” he said.
The Commissioner of Police in Jigawa State assured residents that the case would be handled thoroughly, professionally and impartially.
The police also appealed to members of the public to avoid speculation and refrain from circulating unverified information capable of causing unnecessary anxiety or prejudicing the investigation.
The command said further updates would be made available as the investigation progresses.
