The South West Guild of Online Publishers (SWEGOP) has called for improved security in Nigeria’s border communities to protect residents and prevent a recurrence of incidents such as the abduction of pupils and teachers in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State.
The guild made the call on Sunday, July 12, 2026, following the rescue of the abducted schoolchildren and teachers, who regained their freedom on Friday, July 10, 2026, after spending 55 days in captivity through a joint operation by military and paramilitary personnel.
In a statement jointly signed by its Chairman, Bisi Oladele, and Public Relations Officer, Remi Oladoye, SWEGOP commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Oyo State Governor, Engr. Seyi Makinde, and security agencies for their roles in securing the release of more than 40 pupils and teachers kidnapped from schools in Oriire.
According to the guild, the successful rescue operation demonstrates the importance of strong political will and effective collaboration among security agencies in addressing insecurity across the country.
SWEGOP also praised the gallantry, resilience and professionalism displayed by the security personnel throughout the operation, noting that their efforts had restored hope to the affected families and residents of Oyo State.
The publishers’ body sympathised with the families of security personnel and other victims who lost their lives during the incident, praying for the peaceful repose of the deceased.
The guild observed that repeated attacks by terrorists have revealed a pattern of targeting border communities characterised by inadequate security presence, poor telecommunications services, limited road access and easy escape routes into neighbouring countries.
It, therefore, urged governments at all levels to strengthen cooperation among security agencies, community leaders and other stakeholders in protecting vulnerable border communities.
SWEGOP further appealed to the Federal Government and the Oyo State Government to sustain investments in intelligence gathering, surveillance, rapid response mechanisms and community policing to guarantee the safety of schools and create a secure environment for teaching and learning.
The guild reaffirmed its commitment to responsible journalism and pledged continued support for initiatives aimed at promoting peace, public safety and the protection of lives and property across the South-West and Nigeria.
