The Yoruba Council of Elders (YCE) has commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde and security agencies for the successful rescue of victims abducted during the recent attack on Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State.
The Council described the rescue as a welcome development, saying it had brought relief to the families of the victims, residents of Oyo State and the entire South-West region, where many had anxiously awaited their safe return.
In a statement signed by its Secretary-General, Chief Oladipo Oyewole, and made available to journalists in Ibadan, the YCE praised the coordinated efforts of the Federal Government, the Oyo State Government, the military, the Nigeria Police Force, the Department of State Services (DSS), local hunters and other security operatives involved in the rescue mission.
According to the Council, the successful operation underscored the importance of collaboration among security agencies and local stakeholders in combating insecurity.
The elders congratulated the rescued victims and their families, while also extending condolences to the families of those who lost their lives during the incident. They prayed for the peaceful repose of the deceased and comfort for their loved ones.
The Council, however, urged the Federal Government and security agencies not to relent in addressing the growing menace of kidnapping and other violent crimes across the country.
It stressed that rescue operations should be complemented by sustained intelligence gathering, improved surveillance and stronger security presence in vulnerable communities to prevent similar attacks.
The YCE also called for the arrest and prosecution of those responsible for the abduction, noting that bringing perpetrators to justice would serve as a deterrent to other criminal elements.
The Council expressed optimism that with sustained collaboration among governments, security agencies and local communities, the fight against kidnapping and other forms of criminality would continue to record greater success.
