An Islamic cleric, Malam Musa Lukwa, was reportedly attacked shortly after the Friday congregational prayer in the Mabera area of Sokoto metropolis on Friday.
The incident reportedly followed weeks of controversy over comments attributed to the cleric concerning the parents of Prophet Muhammad, which some members of the community considered offensive and which had allegedly generated threats.
Sources said Lukwa was confronted shortly after the prayer by a man who allegedly questioned him over the contentious remarks before attacking him with a knife.
The cleric reportedly sustained injuries in the attack and was taken to a hospital for medical attention. His current condition could not be independently confirmed as of the time of filing this report.
The attack triggered a violent reaction from some of Lukwa’s followers, who reportedly overpowered the alleged assailant and killed him at the scene.
The development subsequently sparked protests and clashes in parts of Sokoto metropolis, including around the Sokoto Area Office, as security personnel moved in to restore order.
The incident has raised fresh concerns over the dangers of religiously charged confrontations and mob justice, particularly in cases involving allegations of blasphemy or remarks considered offensive to religious beliefs.
It has also renewed calls for restraint and the use of lawful channels in addressing allegations capable of inflaming religious and communal tensions.
Confirming the incident, the Public Relations Officer of the Sokoto State Police Command, Deputy Superintendent of Police Ahmad Rufae, acknowledged that the incident occurred but declined to provide further details.
As of the time of filing this report, the identity of the alleged attacker, the exact extent of Lukwa’s injuries and the circumstances surrounding the suspect’s death remained unclear.
The police had not provided further details on the incident, while tensions reportedly remained elevated in parts of the metropolis.
