JAMB Clarifies ‘Not Admitted’, ‘Admission in Progress’ and ‘Admitted’ Statuses on CAPS

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has clarified the different admission statuses candidates may encounter on its Central Admissions Processing System (CAPS).

The Board explained the meanings of “Not Admitted”, “Admission in Progress” and “Admitted” in an explainer video released on Thursday.

JAMB also advised candidates awaiting admission to regularly check their CAPS profiles, noting that their admission status may change as institutions complete the admission process.

Explaining the “Not Admitted” status, the Board said it does not necessarily mean that a candidate has lost the opportunity to secure admission.

“This simply means you’ve not been offered admission yet. However, it does not necessarily mean you will not be admitted,” JAMB said.

Candidates whose CAPS continues to display “Not Admitted” were advised to remain patient and continue checking the platform for possible changes.

On the “Admission in Progress” status, JAMB explained that it generally means an institution has begun the process of offering admission to a candidate, but the necessary approvals have not yet been completed.

“This means your institution’s admission officer has proposed you for admission, but awaiting the head of institution’s recommendation,” the Board said.

JAMB added that the same status may remain after the head of an institution has recommended a candidate if the proposed admission is still awaiting the Board’s final decision.

The Board, however, warned candidates against interpreting “Admission in Progress” as confirmation that they had secured admission.

“Please note that ‘Admission in Progress’ does not mean automatic admission,” JAMB stressed.

According to the Board, an admission recommended by an institution may still be rejected if the candidate does not meet the relevant admission requirements.

“This is because the recommended offer could still be disapproved by the Board if you don’t meet the prerequisite requirements,” JAMB said.

The Board explained that the “Admitted” status is reached only after JAMB has formally approved the admission recommended by the institution.

“This is the point you get the message, ‘CONGRATULATIONS, YOU HAVE BEEN OFFERED ADMISSION’,” the Board said.

Candidates who receive an official admission offer through CAPS can then accept or reject the offer on the platform.

JAMB further explained that admission statuses may change as the admission process progresses and should not be considered final until the process is concluded.

“Remember, your CAPS status will keep changing as the admission process continues until the final stage where you print your admission letter,” the Board said.

The Board consequently advised candidates to continue monitoring their CAPS accounts and obtain admission-related information only through its official communication channels.
