The Federal Ministry of Education has released the final list of textbooks approved for use in Nigerian schools for the 2026–2028 academic period, introducing unique QR-based tracking codes for each approved title as part of measures to improve transparency and accountability in textbook selection and procurement.
The ministry said the first phase of the national textbook ranking exercise covered textbooks for Primary 1, Primary 4, Junior Secondary School 1 (JSS 1) and Senior Secondary School 1 (SS 1).
Each textbook on the approved list has been assigned a unique Ranking/QR Tracking Code, alongside information including the title, author or authors, publisher and year of publication.
According to the ministry, the codes are intended to make it easier for education authorities and other stakeholders to identify, monitor and track approved instructional materials and strengthen accountability throughout the textbook supply chain.
The exercise was conducted under the supervision of the Minister of Education, Dr Maruf Tunji Alausa, and the Minister of State for Education, Prof. Suwaiba Sa’id Ahmad, with the final list receiving the approval of the Minister of Education.
The ministry said the additional process of generating and assigning individual tracking codes to the ranked textbooks contributed to the time required to complete and validate the final approved lists.
It described the introduction of the QR tracking system as a significant step towards improving the monitoring and control of instructional materials approved for use in schools.
The national textbook ranking exercise is being implemented in phases, with preparations for the second phase expected to commence following the completion and approval of the first round.
The second phase will cover textbooks for Primary 2, Primary 5, JSS 2 and SS 2.
The ministry said the same ranking, identification and tracking measures would be applied to textbooks considered under the second phase.
It urged publishers, schools, education authorities, procurement agencies and other stakeholders involved in the provision of instructional materials to consult the official approved list before selecting or procuring textbooks for the classes covered by the exercise.
The ministry said the initiative was part of the Federal Government’s efforts to ensure that pupils and teachers have access to quality, relevant and curriculum-aligned learning materials.
It added that the exercise was also designed to strengthen transparency and accountability in the provision of textbooks across the country’s education system.
The Federal Ministry of Education further advised all stakeholders to comply with the approved list in providing and using textbooks for the specified classes.
The complete 2026–2028 Ranked and Approved Textbooks, including the unique Ranking/QR Tracking Code assigned to each approved title, has been made available by the ministry for consultation by stakeholders.
