The Oyo State Police Command has commenced an investigation into an alleged extortion claim involving two police officers attached to the Federal Highway Patrol Unit in the state.
The Command said the investigation followed a directive by the Commissioner of Police to establish the facts and circumstances surrounding the incident.
According to a statement issued by the Command’s spokesperson, DSP Ayanlade Olayinka, the incident occurred on September 29, 2026, at about 11am along the Idiayunre/Ijebu-Ode Expressway.
The Command said a commercial bus driver allegedly overtook a truck being stopped by officers of the Federal Highway Patrol Unit in a manner that nearly resulted in a serious road traffic accident.
It said the driver subsequently stopped abruptly after sighting a Safer Highway Patrol team ahead.
According to the Police, ASP Oyetade Olayinka approached the vehicle to ascertain what had happened and requested the driver’s licence and relevant vehicle documents.
The driver, however, allegedly declined to produce the documents.
The Command said that in an apparent attempt to resolve the situation, the driver contacted the Chairman of Onitsha Garage, Mr BJ, who later arrived at the scene with other members of the park leadership in a Toyota Sienna bus.
The arrival of the group, according to the Police, led to increased activity at the scene, prompting officers of the Safer Highway and Federal Highway Patrol Units to work together to manage the situation, protect lives and property, and prevent disruption of traffic.
The Police further stated that while the situation was being managed, the commercial bus driver began recording the incident with his mobile phone and made allegations against the officers.
It added that the chairman of the park, after interacting with the parties and officers present, pleaded with the officers as efforts continued to resolve the matter.
The Command said it subsequently commenced a discreet investigation, during which the two officers involved were invited to Police Headquarters, interviewed and made statements under caution.
It stated that the preliminary investigation found no evidence of extortion against the officers in connection with the incident.
To further clarify the allegation, the Command said the leadership of Onitsha Garage members who were present at the scene had also been invited for questioning.
According to the Police, the park leaders undertook to assist the investigation by producing the commercial bus driver who made the allegation against the officers.
The Command said it was awaiting the driver’s appearance so that he could provide his statement and clarify the circumstances surrounding his claim, while further investigative steps were being taken to establish the full facts.
The Oyo Police Command reiterated its commitment to professional policing, accountability and transparency, stressing that complaints against its personnel would continue to be investigated objectively.
It also assured members of the public that verified developments arising from the investigation would be communicated appropriately.
