Lead City Omitted as CLE Publishes Approved Law Faculties List

The Council of Legal Education has released a list of 114 universities approved to offer law programmes in Nigeria, warning that only institutions on the list are permitted to admit students into the Bachelor of Laws (LL.B) programme.

From the list released, Lead City University, Ibadan, is not included as a university authorised to admit Law students.

In a circular issued on Friday, March 13, 2026, the council said the move is part of efforts to protect prospective law students from enrolling in programmes that may ultimately jeopardise their chances of becoming qualified lawyers.

The circular, signed by the council’s Secretary and Director of Administration, Aderonke Osho, cautioned universities against running law programmes without proper approval, stressing that such actions would attract sanctions.

It also delivered a clear warning to prospective students and their families: anyone admitted into an unapproved law programme will not be eligible for admission into the Nigerian Law School, the final stage of professional training required to practise law in the country.

“The public is further informed that any university that admits students into a law programme without the approval of the Council of Legal Education is acting contrary to the provisions regulating legal education in Nigeria and will be subject to appropriate sanctions,” the circular stated.

For thousands of students aspiring to join the legal profession, the announcement serves as an important reminder to carefully verify the accreditation status of universities before applying.

The council said the list of approved institutions would continue to be reviewed and updated as part of its mandate to regulate legal education and maintain professional standards across Nigeria.

The Council of Legal Education is the statutory body responsible for the professional training and regulation of aspiring lawyers in the country. Established under the Legal Education Act, it oversees the Nigerian Law School and ensures that legal education in Nigerian universities meets the required standards.
