The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has cautioned Nigerians against engaging in reprisal attacks following reports of xenophobic violence targeting Nigerians in South Africa, assuring the public that the Federal Government is actively handling the situation through diplomatic and security channels.
The Force said security and intelligence agencies had carried out a comprehensive assessment of the situation after a Joint Intelligence Board meeting held on May 18, 2026, under the chairmanship of the National Security Adviser.
In a statement issued on Sunday, May 31, 2026, the police said there was no cause for panic, stressing that relevant government institutions were already working to protect Nigerians both at home and abroad while seeking a peaceful resolution to the matter.
The statement noted that although concerns over attacks on Nigerians in South Africa were understandable, citizens must not resort to violence, intimidation, destruction of property, or any form of unlawful conduct against South African nationals or businesses operating in Nigeria.
According to the Force, any attempt to attack South African diplomatic facilities, business interests, or other lawful entities within Nigeria would be treated as a criminal offence and prosecuted in line with extant laws.
The police emphasised that Nigeria remained a country governed by the rule of law and that every person lawfully residing in the country, regardless of nationality, was entitled to protection under the law.
The Force also warned against the circulation of unverified and inflammatory information, especially on social media platforms, saying false or provocative content could heighten tensions, threaten public peace, and undermine ongoing diplomatic efforts.
To forestall any breakdown of law and order, the police disclosed that security had been strengthened around critical national assets, foreign missions, and other strategic locations across the country.
It added that adequate deployment of personnel had been made in collaboration with other security and intelligence agencies to maintain peace and protect lives and property.
The Nigeria Police Force urged Nigerians to remain calm, vigilant, and law-abiding while continuing their legitimate daily activities without fear.
The statement reaffirmed the commitment of the Force to safeguarding national security and preserving public order, while appreciating Nigerians for their cooperation and understanding as authorities continue to manage the situation.
