Veteran Nigerian journalist and Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of Premium Eagle Media Limited, Dotun Oladipo, has died at the age of 56.
Oladipo, who founded Eagle Online, reportedly died in Lagos on Tuesday, August 25, 2026, after he suddenly took ill at his office.
His death was announced by Eagle Online on Wednesday, with the publication describing the development as a shock to his colleagues, friends and associates.
The President of the Guild of Corporate Online Publishers (GOCOP), Danlami Nmodu, also confirmed Oladipo’s death on the guild’s WhatsApp platform.
Nmodu described the deceased as an Emeritus President of the guild, noting that Oladipo had previously led the organisation.
“It has just been confirmed that Emeritus President, Mr Dotun Oladipo, died today,” Nmodu stated.
The General Secretary of the Innovative Media Partners Cooperative Multipurpose Society (IMPCMS), Nkanu Egbe, also announced the journalist’s death.
Egbe said Oladipo, who was the cooperative’s president, died suddenly in Lagos on Tuesday.
He described the deceased’s death as a major loss to both the cooperative and the Nigerian media industry, noting that Oladipo combined his leadership role in the organisation with a journalism career spanning nearly three decades.
According to Egbe, details of the funeral arrangements, condolence visits and interim leadership of the cooperative would be communicated in due course.
He urged members to remember Oladipo’s family in their prayers.
The presidential candidate of the African Action Congress, Omoyele Sowore, also mourned the journalist in a Facebook post on Wednesday.
Sowore described Oladipo as “a complete gentleman, accomplished digital journalist and remarkable human being,” while extending his condolences to his family, friends and colleagues.
Oladipo had an extensive career in the Nigerian media, including a stint as Politics Editor at PUNCH Newspapers, where he also served on the newspaper’s editorial board.
He later worked with the Nigerian Tribune, Nigerian Compass and The Sun before establishing Eagle Online through Premium Eagle Media Limited.
A graduate of Mass Communication, Oladipo obtained a Higher National Diploma from Ogun State Polytechnic, Abeokuta, in 1992.
Following news of his death, colleagues and associates took to social media to pay tribute to the journalist, describing him as a consummate professional, humble personality and dedicated media practitioner.
His death comes as a major loss to Nigeria’s journalism community, particularly the country’s growing digital media sector.
