The management of Lagos State University (LASU) has announced the death of one of its students, Otabor Boluwatife Joseph, following injuries he sustained during an armed robbery attack in the Iba area of Lagos State.
The deceased, a student of the Department of History and International Studies with matriculation number 240341269, reportedly succumbed to injuries sustained in the attack after days of medical treatment.
In a statement signed by the Acting Coordinator of the Centre for Information and Public Relations, Olaniyi S. Jeariogbe, the university described the incident as devastating and expressed profound sadness over the loss.
The Vice-Chancellor of LASU, Ibiyemi Ibilola Olatunji-Bello, extended condolences to the bereaved family, friends, and members of the university community.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with them as they mourn this tragic loss,” the statement read.
According to the university, the incident occurred off-campus on the night of Friday, May 29, 2026, when Joseph and some of his friends were attacked by armed robbers in the Iba area.
“Available information indicates that the unfortunate incident occurred off campus on the night of Friday, 29th May 2026, when the deceased and his friends were attacked by armed robbers,” the statement said.
LASU disclosed that upon receiving reports of the attack, it immediately activated support mechanisms through the Students’ Affairs Division and closely monitored the student’s condition.
The university noted that the Acting Dean of Students’ Affairs, Abiodun Fatai-Abatan, coordinated support efforts, escalated the matter to the Vice-Chancellor, and maintained communication with medical personnel involved in the student’s treatment.
Following Joseph’s death on Tuesday, June 2, 2026, representatives of the university engaged with his family, officials of Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, and law enforcement authorities.
LASU also confirmed that it is working closely with security agencies to ensure a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the attack and to bring the perpetrators to justice.
Reiterating its condolences, the university prayed for strength and comfort for the deceased’s family and all those affected by the tragic loss.
“The University condoles with the family and all who knew him and prays that the Almighty God will give them the fortitude to bear the irreparable loss. We also pray that the soul of Otabor Boluwatife Joseph rest in perfect peace,” the statement added.
