Makinde Inaugurates Oyo State Council of Obas, Olubadan Named Chairman

Governor Seyi Makinde, Discussing with Oba Oba Ghandi Afolabi Olaoye and Oba Rashidi Adewolu Ladoja

Share on FacebookShare on TwitterShare on WhatsappTelegram the story

Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State, on Thursday, January 15, 2026, inaugurated the Oyo State Council of Obas and Chiefs, appointing with His Imperial Majesty, the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Rashidi Adewolu Ladoja, as chairman for a two-year term.

Makinde explained that the chairmanship will rotate every two years among the three paramount rulers in the state – the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Alaafin of Oyo Oyo and Soun of Ogbomosho – according to the Oyo State constitution.

While the Olubadan and the Soun attended the inauguration, the Alaafin was absent.

Ahead of the inauguration, the governor met with the three monarchs, who agreed that the rotation should start with the Olubadan.

Makinde said, “I called the three paramount rulers in Oyo State – Olubadan, Alaafin, and Soun – on the rotation of the chairmanship as contained in the constitution. The three monarchs agreed to start the rotation with Olubadan. On that note, I hereby pronounce the Oyo State Council of Obas and Chiefs inaugurated.”

He added that no matter how difficult a matter is, once a meeting is summoned, and stakeholders sit to discuss it, the matter will be resolved.

It will be recalled that the Oyo State House of Assembly has passed the Oyo State Council of Obas and Chiefs (Further Amendments) Bill, 2025, which aims to improve traditional leadership in the state.

The bill retains the rotational chairmanship system, with the position alternating every two years among the Alaafin of Oyo, the Olubadan of Ibadanland, and the Soun of Ogbomoso.

The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has recorded a major breakthrough in its ongoing crackdown on organized crime with the dismantling of an interstate car-snatching syndicate allegedly operating across the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) and several states in the country. The operation, carried out under the directive of the Commandant General of the NSCDC, Ahmed Abubakar Audi, led to the arrest of six suspected members of the syndicate by the Commandant General’s Special Intelligence Squad (CG’SIS). The suspects were identified as Hassan Bukar, Adam Musa, also known as “Yellow,” Ibrahim Haruna, popularly called “Biggie,” Adamu Mohammed, Sahal Abdullahi Aliyu, and Abubakar Yusuf, while efforts are ongoing to apprehend other fleeing accomplices. According to preliminary investigations, the syndicate allegedly specialized in stealing vehicles and dismantling them through the collaboration of scrap dealers in order to conceal evidence and evade detection by security agencies. The NSCDC disclosed that proceeds from the illicit operation were reportedly laundered through cash transactions and Point of Sale (POS) channels. Commander of the CG’SIS, Commandant A.S. Dandaura, confirmed that five shops used for dismantling stolen vehicles at the Zuba Scrap Market in the FCT had been sealed off by operatives. He added that exhibits recovered during the operation included a Toyota Camry, several vehicle documents, and multiple number plates believed to be connected to stolen vehicles. Further investigations, according to the NSCDC, revealed that the suspects were linked to a broader criminal network involved in the coordinated supply, resale, and concealment of stolen vehicles across different states. Meanwhile, in a separate operation at the BUA Cement Factory in Okpella, Edo State, NSCDC operatives arrested two factory employees identified as Goodday Okhagbe and Monday Previous over the alleged theft of industrial hydraulic fluid. The corps said investigations into both cases are ongoing, assuring that all suspects found culpable would be prosecuted in accordance with the law.
