The All Progressives Congress (APC) has expanded its Presidential Campaign Council for the 2027 general election following a backlash over the composition of its initial membership, bringing in additional stakeholders from within and outside the ruling party.
Among those included in the revised list are the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike; Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke; and Anambra State Governor, Chukwuma Soludo, despite their affiliations with other political parties.
Under the new arrangement, Wike has been appointed campaign coordinator for Rivers State and the FCT, while Soludo will coordinate the campaign in Anambra State and Adeleke will oversee activities in Osun State.
Wike is a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Soludo was re-elected for a second term in November 2025 on the platform of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), while Adeleke secured re-election on August 16 under the Accord Party.
The revised campaign council is scheduled for inauguration by President Bola Tinubu at the Presidential Villa in Abuja on Wednesday, October 14, 2026.
The APC had initially released the campaign council list on August 22, with former Zamfara State Governor, Abdulaziz Yari, named Director-General.
Senate President Godswill Akpabio, Speaker of the House of Representatives Tajudeen Abbas, and Yobe State Governor Mai Mala Buni were appointed deputy director-generals in the initial arrangement.
However, the revised list introduces changes to the council’s leadership structure. Akpabio, Abbas and Kwara State Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq have been appointed deputy vice-chairmen I, II and III, respectively.
Buni is now Deputy Director-General I for the North, while Deputy Senate President Barau Jibrin, who previously held the position of Deputy Director-General III for the North, has been moved to Deputy Director-General II for the region.
Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele and Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives Benjamin Kalu have also been appointed deputy director-generals I and II for the South, respectively.
A major feature of the revised council is the appointment of all 32 APC governors as campaign coordinators for their respective states.
For Oyo State, the party’s governorship candidate, Sharafadeen Alli, has been named campaign coordinator. Mohammed Abubakar, the APC governorship candidate in Bauchi State, will coordinate the campaign in the state, while Chijioke Chukwu, the party’s flagbearer in Abia State, has been assigned the same responsibility.
The revised list also includes 14 advisers, a departure from the initial composition.
Those appointed include former Osun State Governor Bisi Akande; former Ogun State Governor Segun Osoba; Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume; former Cross River South Senator Florence Ita-Giwa; former Ogun State Governor Ibikunle Amosun; former APC National Secretary Iyiola Omisore; and former Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun, among others.
The expansion comes as political parties intensify preparations for the 2027 general election, with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) having officially opened campaigns for the presidential and National Assembly elections on August 19.
According to INEC’s revised timetable, the campaign period will end on January 14, 2027.
Tinubu is expected to face competition from several opposition figures, including former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and Peter Obi, the flagbearer of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), in the presidential contest.
