The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has announced the tragic death of seventeen police officers who were killed during a terrorist attack on the Nigerian Army Special Forces School in Buni Yadi, located in Gujba Local Government Area of Yobe State.

According to a statement signed by the Force Public Relations Officer, Force Headquarters, Abuja, DCP Anthony Okon Placid, the attack occurred in the early hours of May 8, 2026, when heavily armed terrorists launched a coordinated assault on the military institution from multiple directions at approximately 1:15 a.m.

The officers, who were participating in specialised operational training programmes at the facility, were among the casualties of the attack. Several personnel of the Nigerian Army also reportedly lost their lives while resisting the attackers and defending the institution.

Reacting to the incident, the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, described the deceased officers as brave and committed personnel who demonstrated extraordinary patriotism through their dedication to advanced counter-terrorism and tactical training initiatives.

The IGP expressed condolences on behalf of the entire police force to the families of the slain officers, assuring them that their sacrifices would remain honoured and remembered by the nation.

As part of efforts to show support and solidarity, the Commissioner of Police, Yobe State Command, Usman Kanfani Jibrin, visited the training institution on behalf of the Inspector-General. During the visit, he met with the Commandant of the school, A.C. Enuagu, alongside officers of the Nigerian Army and surviving police trainees.

Jibrin praised the resilience and courage shown by the surviving officers and encouraged them to remain steadfast in completing the training programme as a tribute to their fallen colleagues.

The Nigeria Police Force reaffirmed its commitment to collaborating with the Armed Forces and other security agencies to track down and bring those responsible for the attack to justice.

The statement concluded with a tribute to the fallen officers, noting that their service, sacrifice, and commitment to national duty would forever remain etched in the nation’s memory.
