The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM) has successfully intervened in the case of a young Nigerian woman, identified simply as Mercy, who had earlier sent a distress message to her younger brother, Victor, expressing despair over her situation as an illegal immigrant.
In an emotional video shared with her brother, Mercy said: “This may be my last video. I just want to document something. I am tired. I tried my best. Victor, my younger brother, I don’t wish to leave you but I can’t cope anymore.”
Her cry for help caught the attention of a concerned man identified as Dr Abraham, who forwarded the clip to the Chairman/CEO of NiDCOM, Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, with an appeal to assist in bringing her home, promising to foot the expenses for the repatriation.
Responding swiftly, Dabiri-Erewa contacted the head of the Nigerian community in the country where Mercy was stranded.
A tracking effort, which began on July 29, 2025, was launched to locate her.
NiDCOM confirmed that the rescue mission has been successful and that Mercy is now on her way back to Nigeria.
“We are glad to inform Nigerians that she is on her way home. Anyone being promised a journey to Europe through Libya should know that it is a voluntary venture and fraught with dangers. We look forward to receiving her,” Dabiri-Erewa stated.
The development comes amid renewed warnings from Nigerian authorities against irregular migration, especially through the Libya route, which has left many citizens stranded, exploited, or lost in transit.
