A 69-year-old learner, Kate Bosede Akomolafe, has emerged as one of the standout matriculants at the Distance Learning Centre (DLC) of the University of Ibadan (UI), as the institution formally admitted 5,000 learners for the 2024/2025 academic session.
Mrs. Akomolafe, who is enrolled to study Social Work, is a retired Data Processing Officer at RT Briscoe Motor Company.
According to her, after retirement, she ventured into entrepreneurship, first as a distributor for Nigerian Eagle Flour Mills before moving into pig farming.
Born on December 22, 1956, the septuagenarian originally obtained her West African School Certificate in 1976 from Government Secondary School, Creek Road, Port Harcourt.
Determined to fulfil her long-held dream of obtaining a university degree, she returned to the classroom in 2023 to resit both the WASSCE and NECO examinations, securing the required credits for admission into UI.
Speaking on her choice of course, Akomolafe said she opted for Social Work to enhance her capacity to run her Non-Governmental Organisation, Christ’s Care for the Widow, which supports widows through empowerment and welfare initiatives.
A mother of four grown children, she expressed strong commitment to excellence, declaring that she is prepared to give her studies her best and is aiming for a First-Class degree.
Akomolafe’s inspiring academic pursuits underscore the growing enthusiasm for lifelong learning and reinforce UI’s commitment to providing flexible education options through its Distance Learning Centre.
