Following the intervention of the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has suspended its protest against the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC), directing workers to resume duties immediately from Wednesday, April 1, 2026.
The NLC said it had instructed all its chapters to halt protest actions following steps taken by AEDC management to address its grievances.
After several hours of discussion with Wike, the minister directed all parties to resolve their differences, prompting AEDC management to set up a committee to address workers’ concerns. The committee is expected to submit its report in the next two weeks.
According to the union, AEDC has agreed to review the recent disengagement exercise with a view to recalling some affected staff, reassess promotion exercises across the board, and suspend further layoffs.
On Tuesday, NLC President, Joe Ajaero, led over 200 union members to the AEDC headquarters in Abuja, shutting down the facility in protest over plans to sack staff and the failure to promote eligible workers.
