The Honourable Minister of State for Education, Professor Suwaiba Said Ahmad, has officially announced that the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) will transition fully to Computer-Based Testing (CBT) by 2026.
The move, according to the Minister, is aimed at promoting fairness, innovation, and eliminating examination malpractice in Nigeria’s educational system.
“Digital exams are the future, and Nigeria is getting ready,” Prof. Ahmad declared, emphasising the federal government’s commitment to ensuring that no student is left behind, especially those in rural and underserved communities.
To ensure inclusivity, the Ministry of Education is working closely with the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), and state governments to expand digital infrastructure and access across the country.
Addressing concerns over rural access, Prof. Ahmad reassured stakeholders that “every student will be included in this digital move,” as plans are already underway to provide the necessary resources and support to remote areas.
Supporting the transition, Dr. Amos Dangut, a senior official at WAEC, noted that student feedback has been overwhelmingly positive.
“Students love CBT. Our data shows high satisfaction rates and a strong preference for digital exams over the traditional paper-based format. This is a clear win for technology in education”, she stated.
