The United Kingdom has applauded the economic and trade reforms introduced by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, describing them as bold, brave, and positive steps toward repositioning Nigeria’s economy.
British High Commissioner to Nigeria, Dr. Richard Montgomery, gave the commendation today during a courtesy visit to the First Lady of Nigeria, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, at the State House, Abuja.
Montgomery said the UK government recognises the opportunities emerging from the difficult but necessary reforms undertaken by President Tinubu, noting that they are already creating new avenues for growth and enhanced bilateral trade between the two nations.
He further expressed admiration for the Renewed Hope Initiative (RHI), the flagship empowerment programme spearheaded by the First Lady, particularly in education, health, and humanitarian interventions. According to him, RHI has proven to be a strong vehicle for improving women’s lives, especially in key sectors of development.
The envoy also noted the UK’s interest in Nigeria’s ongoing constitutional amendment process, particularly the push for special seats for women in the National Assembly, which he described as a vital step toward inclusive governance.
In her response, Senator Oluremi Tinubu reiterated her commitment to ensuring that the Renewed Hope Initiative aligns with the administration’s broader Renewed Hope Agenda. She emphasized that women’s empowerment remains a central focus, especially for those in the informal sector.
“RHI focuses also on women empowerment in the informal sector. These are the ones whose lives we are directly touching,” the First Lady said.
She expressed concern about the dwindling number of women in the National Assembly and pledged to support efforts aimed at improving female representation adding, “We have to really know the right people to represent us, who can really do the work. That is what we have to enlighten our women about.”
The British High Commissioner was accompanied on the visit by the Deputy High Commissioner, Gill Lever.
