Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Tuggar, has stepped down from his role, drawing the curtain on his time in the federal cabinet to pursue a long-held governorship ambition in Bauchi State.
The development was confirmed on Monday, March 30, 2026, in a brief statement by the ministry’s spokesperson, Kimiebi Ebienfa, who simply noted that the minister’s resignation had been received.
Behind the short announcement, however, lies a significant political shift. Tuggar’s decision marks a return to familiar terrain in Bauchi politics, where he has previously sought the governorship.
A native of Udubo in Gamawa Local Government Area, his renewed ambition signals unfinished business in his home state.
His intention to contest had not come as a surprise. Earlier, his Special Adviser on Media and Communications Strategy, Alkasim Abdulkadir, had openly confirmed that the minister was preparing to enter the race.
Abdulkadir said, “The minister is interested and aspires to run for the governorship seat of Bauchi State”, adding that Tuggar would align his next steps with the electoral timetable and guidelines set by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
Tuggar is also among a group of cabinet members under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu who have been widely speculated to be eyeing elective positions ahead of the next political cycle, moves that could reshape both the federal cabinet and state-level contests in the coming months.
For Tuggar, the resignation is more than a procedural step; it is a pivot from diplomacy back to grassroots politics, where the stakes are deeply personal and the electorate, closer to home.
