Charlie Kirk, the 31-year-old co-founder of Turning Point USA and a prominent conservative activist closely allied with U.S. President Donald Trump, was shot dead at a university event in Utah in what authorities are calling a targeted assassination. The fatal incident occurred on Wednesday at Utah Valley University, where Kirk was addressing a large outdoor crowd. According to videos circulating online, a single gunshot rang out, striking him as he recoiled, clutched his neck, and fell from his chair. Panic quickly spread among the attendees, many of whom screamed and ran for safety as the scene descended into chaos.
Witnesses described the moment as shocking and traumatic. One Turning Point USA volunteer recalled watching Kirk collapse in a pool of blood before being carried away by supporters. Another attendee noted the absence of visible security measures, saying the lack of screening made the gathering feel vulnerable from the start.
President Trump announced Kirk’s death on his Truth Social platform, calling him “The Great, and even Legendary, Charlie Kirk,” and declaring that no one had understood the heart of American youth better. He ordered flags across the United States to be flown at half-mast until Sunday in Kirk’s honour. In a later address from the White House, Trump blamed what he described as “radical left” rhetoric for fueling the environment that led to the killing, warning that years of demonization of political opponents had culminated in violence.
Utah Governor Spencer Cox condemned the shooting as a political assassination, calling it a dark day for both the state and the nation. He emphasized Kirk’s role not only as a political figure but also as a husband and father, praising his belief in the power of free speech and open debate on American campuses.
Prominent Democrats, including former Presidents Joe Biden and Barack Obama, also condemned the violence. Biden stressed that “there is no place in our country for this kind of violence,” urging unity in rejecting political extremism. California Governor Gavin Newsom described the killing as “disgusting, vile, and reprehensible,” adding that political violence must be rejected in every form.
Authorities say the shooter may have fired from a rooftop and was dressed in dark clothing. Surveillance footage is being reviewed, though the quality is limited. The FBI confirmed that one individual briefly detained was released after questioning, and the investigation remains ongoing.
Kirk had risen to national prominence as a “rock star” among young conservatives, playing a pivotal role in mobilizing youth support for Trump. His assassination has reignited debate over the rising threat of political violence in the United States and the dangers of deepening polarization in American society.
