A popular Nigerian actress, Toyin Adegbola, popularly known as “Toyin Asewo to re mecca”, has refuted a widely circulated allegation that she once dated a former governor of Oyo State, the late Otunba Adebayo Alao-Akala, reiterating, “We never dated each other.”
Adegbola, a younger sister of the former Minister of Transport and Aviation, Chief Ebenezer Babatope, revealed that their paths only crossed in politics.
Speaking on Oyinmomo tv, Adegbola explained, “I didn’t date the ex-governor of Oyo State, late Otunba Adebayo Alao-Akala. Alao-Akala wasn’t my lover. Alao-Akala was a good man. He only liked me. There was a time somebody asked Alao-Akala if he was going out with me. He told the person that there wasn’t anything like that. He said that Toyin is only doing political work for us. Toyin is a good asset to us, and if I should date her; she would not be able to do the good work she is doing for us.”
She added that it wasn’t Alao-Akala alone that people alleged that she was dating, adding that she was accused of dating the current Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Adewolu Rashidi Ladoja, and the nation’s former president, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo.

“At a point, it was alleged that I was dating Oba Rashidi Adewolu Ladoja. At another time, I was alleged to have dated Chief Olusegun Obasanjo. How many people will I date? I don’t have a husband, and I don’t have a concubine. Also, I don’t have a sugar daddy”, she added.
The actress revealed that since the death of her husband, she had never had sex with any man, stressing, “After I lost my husband, I refused to remarry because of my children and their future.”
She went down memory lane to explain the hardship she experienced as a teen, saying, “My mother died when I was 16, and my father died when I was about to be 18 years old. To survive, I had to work as a housemaid. I was almost raped at midnight in the passage I used to sleep while I was working as a housemaid. I wept bitterly. Afterwards, I vowed that if I make it in life, I will help the helpless. If all I have is N1000, I can give it to the needy. As a younger lady, I sold many things. I hawked snails, elubo (yam flour) in Osogbo, where I later took up a political appointment as an adult.”
She also stated that she wished to be a nurse but it never worked, appreciating God that her daughter and granddaughter are qualified nurses abroad.
According to her, actor Tunbosi Odunsi, popularly known as Baba Amoye, discovered her while working as a broadcaster as a prospective actress, adding that she got her fame in Oga Bello’s movie titled Asewo to re Mecca, released in 1992, where she played a lead role.
“Ever since then, people have been calling me Asewo to re Mecca. That is the name people call me till today”, she added.
