President Bola Tinubu has announced a major shake-up in the hierarchy of the Nigerian Armed Forces as part of efforts to strengthen the country’s national security architecture.
The changes were disclosed in a statement issued on Friday in Abuja by the President’s Special Adviser on Media and Public Communication, Sunday Dare.
According to the statement, Olufemi Oluyede has been appointed as the new Chief of Defence Staff, replacing General Christopher Musa. W. Shaibu has been named the new Chief of Army Staff, while SK Aneke takes over as the Chief of Air Staff. In addition, I. Abbas has been appointed the new Chief of Naval Staff, while E.A.P. Undiendeye retains his position as the Chief of Defence Intelligence.
President Tinubu commended the outgoing Service Chiefs for their patriotic service and dedicated leadership, noting that their contributions had been instrumental to ongoing national security reforms.
He also urged the new appointees to justify the confidence reposed in them and to uphold the professionalism, vigilance, and unity that define the Armed Forces of Nigeria.
“The President expects the newly appointed Service Chiefs to rededicate themselves to the constitutional duty of protecting Nigeria’s sovereignty and ensuring internal peace,” the statement read.
All appointments, according to the Presidency, take immediate effect.
